Five Gentle Movements That Wake Up Your Whole Body
Ten minutes, no equipment, no floor work. This is the exact routine I do on the deck before breakfast — and the one I still do on the mornings I really can't be bothered.

I spent thirty years as a physiotherapy assistant, and the single biggest myth I met was this: that you have to get fit before you can start moving. It is the other way round.
Why ten minutes beats an hour
An hour of determined exercise three times a week is a wonderful idea that most of us abandon by February. Ten minutes every single morning is a slightly dull idea that quietly changes your body over a year.
Movement you will actually repeat is worth more than movement that impresses. So this routine is short, it happens indoors, and nothing in it requires you to get down on the floor and wonder how you will get back up.
The five movements
- Shoulder rolls and neck turns. Ten slow circles each way, then turn your head gently left and right five times. This is the one that stops me feeling stiff before I have even stood up properly.
- Standing calf raises. Hold the back of a sturdy chair and rise onto your toes ten times. Slow down on the way back. This is quietly the best balance practice there is.
- Seated knee extensions. Sitting tall, straighten one leg out in front of you, hold for three seconds, lower. Ten each side. My knees thank me for this one.
- Standing side reaches. Feet apart, reach one arm over your head and lean gently to the other side. Five each way. It opens up the ribs and makes breathing feel easier.
- Hip circles. Hands on hips, slow circles, ten each direction. Unglamorous, absolutely essential.
The goal is not to feel exhausted. The goal is to feel awake.
How to make it stick
Put it next to something you already do without fail. I do mine while the kettle boils, which means it happens even on the days I have decided I am not in the mood. If a movement hurts — properly hurts, not just a stretch — skip it and mention it to your doctor.
After a few weeks, add a light resistance band to the knee extensions and side reaches. I use these soft fabric ones because they don't roll up or snap, and the lightest band is genuinely light. That is the whole upgrade: one band, two movements, no gym membership.
Start tomorrow morning. Ten minutes. That is the entire ask.

Soft fabric bands in three light tensions — the ones I use for my ten-minute morning routine. No snapping, no rolling up, and they hang on a hook by the door so I actually use them.
